The Waste to Wealth program addresses the significant challenge of unmanaged waste in many communities. Most neighborhoods are surrounded by various types of garbage, particularly household waste such as food residues and other organic materials. Through this program, these waste streams are separated and processed into valuable agricultural inputs, including insect-based livestock feed and organic fertilizer.
This initiative supports farmers by reducing the cost of purchasing commercial livestock feed and lowering overall farm input expenses. In addition, the organic fertilizers produced help improve soil nutrient levels, ultimately promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The core of this process is a bio-conversion technique using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, which transform food waste into high-protein biomass. This biomass is then processed into several BSF products, such as live larvae, dried larvae, and nutrient-rich organic fertilizer.
The program also includes the conversion of plant residues and agricultural by-products—such as rice and corn chaff—into charcoal. The residues are chopped into small pieces, carbonized, mixed with a binder, and then pressed into charcoal briquettes using specialized machinery.
Lastly, the program focuses on recycling plastic waste by shredding it into small chips and using these chips to produce paving blocks. These plastic-enhanced paving blocks have been shown to be stronger and more durable than conventional blocks made from sand–cement mixtures.
